The big one. El Capitan. The white whale. Any kid who grows up in Eden Prairie knows that if you come back to school on Monday having gone sledding at Staring Lake, you will be respected. Maybe that’s why it was voted Best Sledding Hill in this year’s Best of the Best contest. The city of Eden Prairie says the 700-foot sledding hill is open during winter, and while there is no tow rope, there is a warming house. Younger kids arrive by the SUV-load during the day and careen like bumper cars down the hill.
According to Day Tripper, the hill was “made for speed … a day after a snowfall, the hill becomes a smooth surface, perfect for reaching top speeds.” When the sun sets, many adolescents and teens arrive to slide down the icy slope. The Staring Lake Park Sledding Hill is at 14800 Pioneer Trail.
The other finalist was Power Hill Park in Chanhassen.
