The 29th annual February Festival returns to Lake Ann in Chanhassen, noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, Last year’s festivities were held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Event organizers are excited to have the festival in-person once again. According to Chanhassen Recreation Coordinator Priya Tandon, the event draws 1,000 to 2,000 visitors, depending on the weather.

The free festival began as an ice fishing competition, but has grown into an event that encompasses activities for the whole family. There is music, food, dog sled rides, horse drawn wagon rides, snowshoeing, ice skating, sledding and door prizes.

Feb Fest is a great way to get outside and enjoy the Minnesota winter, Tandon said. She admits that she is guilty of staying inside when it’s cold out. The outdoor activity is a great way for friends and community members to reconnect after not seeing each other for a while, she added.

“It’s just a great way to get outside and be active during the winter months,” Tandon said.

The ice fishing contest takes place 1-3 p.m. Prizes will be given for the 50 largest fish, which are determined by weight. Each person fishing is allowed two tickets maximum. Tickets must be affixed to fishing poles or tip-ups during the contest. Each ticket costs $10. A fishing licenses is required for contestants 16 years and older. To register for the contest, visit bit.ly/FebFest2022.

Each ticket corresponds to a pre-drilled hole, Tandon said. While those who signed up for the contest are the only people allowed to fish, spectators are more than welcome to watch the contest and cheer anglers on.

If spectators work up an appetite there will be plenty of refreshments for them to choose from. Grill Star Catering will serve burgers and fries. The Rotary Club of Chanhassen will sell beer, alcoholic and non-alcoholic cider and hot chocolate. There will also be smores kits that attendees can purchase from Boy Scout Troop 330 of Chanhassen and make at bonfire pits.

Keeping COVID-19 in mind, the festival will comply with all mandates put forward by the Minnesota Department of Health, Tandon said. There will be hand sanitizer and masks available to attendees and as much social distancing as possible. Due to the fact the event is outdoors, it should fit a majority of people’s comfort levels, she said.
