Slider Search

Kippie Roth, an Excelsior Elementary fourth-grader, rides a luge sled at a 2017 USA Luge Slider Search event.

The White Castle USA Luge Slider Search, the team’s off-season recruiting tour, is coming to Minneapolis on June 15-16 in hopes of finding kids ages 9-13 who could become the next members of the USA Luge Junior National Development team.

The tour stop will have two free clinics held daily from 9 a.m.-noon and 2-5 p.m. where participants will learn luging basics from U.S. National Team coaches and athletes. Participants selected to advance in the selection process will receive invites to learn the sport in either Lake Placid, New York or Park City, Utah next winter, according to a press release.

Ashlyn Baker, 14, from Victoria, was selected for the USA Luge Junior National Developmental Team after being discovered at the 2017 Minneapolis slider search, according to the release.

More than 70% of the past Olympic teams since 2002 were found at a slider search event including Erin Hamblen, 2014 Olympic bronze medalist and St. Paul-native Tony Benshoof, who competed in the 2006 and 2010 Olympic games.
