CHASKA — Authorities have determined that a high-speed turn resulted in the drowning deaths of two Shakopee women last fall, according to a Chaska Police Department news release.

Zeynab Osman Abdalla and Bushra Mohamed Abdi, both 19, were found with their car in a Chaska water treatment pond on the evening of Sunday, Oct. 14. They had been missing since the early hours the previous day, sparking a regional search for the two young women.

The case is now inactive, according to the release.

The Minnesota State Patrol reconstructed the crash and authorities determined it occurred at approximately 3 a.m. on Saturday Oct. 13.

“The reconstruction shows that the vehicle was traveling southbound on Highway 41 and the driver attempted to negotiate a turn onto westbound White Oak Drive,” the release stated.

The car was travelling 44 mph, which was too great a speed to turn at the corner, according to the release.

“The vehicle traveled off the street and came to rest in the holding pond and sank to the bottom, in approximately nine feet of water. Both women were found outside the vehicle, in the pond, and were deceased,” the release stated.

Authorities could not determine who was driving at the time of the crash.

“No information or evidence exists that revealed that this incident was anything more than a traffic crash that resulted in the tragic deaths of two young women,” the release stated.

When authorities determined the women to be in the pond, hundreds of concerned people waited, as divers searched the water near the intersection of White Oak Drive and Highway 41.

One of the teens had called 911 for help at 3:07 a.m. Oct. 13, and Chaska police were dispatched to White Oak Drive and Highway 41 within three minutes of the 911 call, but didn’t find anything, according to a 911 transcript. A day-and-a-half later, the bodies of Abdi and Abdalla were found.

Funerals for the teens were held in late October.
