Calling all Muggles!

The Carver County Library presents Tonk, of Tonk and the Aurors, performing original wizard-rock music inspired by Harry Potter and other favorite fantasy worlds.

Tonk appears as part of the library’s “Universe of Stories” program at the Victoria Library on Monday, June 24 at 10:30 a.m. Tonk rocks Chanhassen on Tuesday, June 25 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., then rolls into the Chaska Library on Wednesday, June 26 at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.


The Reading List Council recently announced its 2019 selections for the “Reading List,” an annual best-of list comprised of eight different fiction genres for adult readers. A shortlist of honor titles, up to four per genre, was also announced.

The winner for fantasy was “Foundryside” by Robert Jackson Bennett. The novel explores a city that runs on industrialized magic and a secret war will be fought to overwrite reality itself. This is the first book in a dazzling new series from the author of “City of Stairs.”

The books on the fantasy short list were “The City of Brass” by S.A. Chakraborty, “The Hazel Wood” by Melissa Albert, “The Poppy War” by R.F. Kuang, and “Trail of Lightning” by Rebecca Roanhorse.


Authors Collective: 1 to 3 p.m., Saturday, June 22. A group of authors and writers at all stages of putting a work into book form learn together, publish, and market as professionals.

Chanhassen Library Book Club: 6:30 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, June 25. Join this long-standing book club for a great discussion.

Preschool STEM Storytime: Robots!: 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 26. Learn about robots, coding and so much more during this special preschool STEM storytime.


Adult Special Services Story Hour: 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and 12:45 to 1:45 p.m., Wednesday, June 26. Enjoy music, age-appropriate picture books, discussion and more. Please contact Angela Hunt at 952-448-3886 if you plan to bring a group for the first time.

Tails for Reading: 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Thursday, June 27. Preschool and elementary school age children are welcome to read books aloud to registered therapy dogs to encourage confidence in reading. Presented by North Star Therapy Animals. Children read for a 15-minute session on a first-come, first-serve basis. No registration required.

Danish Star: 1 to 2:30 p.m., Thursday, June 27. Folding paper can be fun! Come learn this traditional decoration and fill your world with stars.


Outdoor Storytime: 10:30 to 11 a.m., Saturday, June 22. Join us for an outdoor storytime at Charlson Thun Community Bandstand. Feel free to bring a chair or blanket to sit on. Please note that the storytime will be moved into the library in case of inclement weather.

Tech Tuesday: 4 to 5 p.m., Tuesday, June 25. Drop in anytime in the hour and try out a varying STEM activity each month. We’ll have a self-guided activity with simple instructions set up so you can explore and learn on your own. Stay as little or as long as you’d like during the hour. For ages 8-13.

Star Dance Party: 10:30 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 26. For ages birth-5. Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to have some fun. Join us for 30 minutes of music, twinkling lights, stories, and dancing.


Master Gardener Help Desk: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, June 22 at the Chanhassen and Chaska libraries. Bring your plant samples and insect disease questions to any of the Yard & Garden Help Desks. Carver/Scott Master Gardeners will help diagnose problems and answer your yard and garden questions.


Family Storytimes: For all ages, with a focus on children age 2 and up. Children, parents and their caregivers are invited to share 30 minutes of singing, playing, reading, writing and talking that encourages the development of early literacy skills. Victoria Library: 10:30 a.m. Monday; Chanhassen Library: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday; Chaska Library: 10:30 a.m. Friday.

Toddler Storytimes: Toddlers and their caregivers are welcome to join us for 20 minutes of action-packed fun with stories, rhymes, fingerplays and musical movement for this age group. Come shake your sillies out with us. For ages 18-36 months. Chanhassen Library: 10:30 a.m. Monday; Victoria Library: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Lapsit Storytime: For ages birth to 18 months. Babies and their caregivers share quality time in a 20-minute session designed to encourage language development through board books and movement activities, followed by time for visiting and play. Chanhassen Library: 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
