The defending Class 2A state boys golf champions showed they're indeed back.
Holy Family Catholic played just eight strokes over par at the Class A State course, Pebble Creek in Becker, shooting a 296 in the first round of the Section 5AA Tournament May 30.
The Fire lead Delano by 29 strokes with 18 holes to play.
How dominant were the Fire? They had the best five rounds of the day. Ben Reddan, in his section debut, shot even-par 72 for medalist honors.
Blake Stedronsky (73), Sam McNulty (75), Jake Bornhoft (76), and Charlie Lindberg (77) followed for Holy Family Catholic. Cole Wilson was also in the top-10 with an 81.
Day Two is Monday, June 3 at Pebble Creek in Becker.
Southwest Christian was eighth of 13 teams with a team score of 366. Jacob Ferrin and Matthew Rixmann advanced to the second day with rounds of 85 and 90.
Other Stars players in the section field were Ty Watchorn (95), Caleb Bendell (96), Mason Day (97), and Jack Hennen (110).
HOLY FAMILY IN FOURTH
Led by medalist Kelly Ryan's 18-hole round of 82, Holy Family Catholic advanced to the second day in Section 5AA as a team with a score of 393 on May 30 at Pebble Creek in Becker.
Providence Academy leads the field with a score of 376. Annandale (385) and Breck School (391) are also back for the second round.
Ryan had nine pars in her round, playing each side in 41 strokes. Ryan was one of two players in the section to shoot in the 80s, leading by four into Day Two.
Allison O'Brien is in the hunt for a spot to state, finishing fifth with an 18-hole score of 93. Mya Braun (105) and Evie Lacy (113) completed the team score for the Fire.
Southwest Christian was eighth of 12 teams with a score of 431.
Nadia Turner, state qualifier in 2018, was 18th with a round of 99. She is six strokes off the pace through 18 holes.
Kendall Hoag (102), Ava Boen (113) and Autumn Wiens (117) completed the team score for the Stars.
