The Minnesota Department of Education recognized 14 southwest metro area schools for their success in using a program to support students with challenges in the classroom and at home, according to a news release from the department.

In total, 71 schools in Minnesota were recognized for using positive behavioral intervention and supports (PBIS) and being leaders in improving school climate and increasing student achievement, the release says.

“I congratulate all of the schools and districts being recognized for their positive behavior intervention support work and thank them for leading the way to better meet the needs of our students,” Education Commissioner Mary Cathryn Ricker said in the release. “Creating a welcoming and safe environment is essential for productive teaching and learning, and so I deeply appreciate the commitment of these schools and districts to PBIS as a part of that work.”
