Minnetonka High School graduate Ryan McCartan will make his Broadway debut in “Wicked” starting Sept. 11 at the Gershwin Theatre, according to a press release from Playbill.
McCartan will be starring as the male lead, Fiyero. He previously played JD in the original cast of Off-Broadway’s “Heathers: The Musical,” and Brad in Fox’s remake of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
The cast of the Broadway show includes Jessica Vosk as Elphaba, Amanda Jane Cooper as Glinda, Isabel Keating as Madame Morrible and Kevin Chamberlin as the Wizard.
The show, which opened in 2003, is based off a book by Gregory Maguire. It tells the story of The Wizard of Oz before Dorothy enters the picture, from the perspective of the Wicked Witch of the West (Elphaba) and Glinda, the Good Witch.
The original production won three Tony Awards; its original cast album won a Grammy Award. “Wicked” has passed $4.5 billion in global sales and is the sixth-longest running production in Broadway history, according to the press release.
In 2016, McCartan returned to Minnetonka High School to speak about positive living. In 2011, while a student at the high school, he won Best Actor at the National High School Musical Theater awards.
McCartan is the son of retired Eden Prairie High School Principal Conn McCartan.
