Ring bologna sold at Ruck’s Meat Processing in Belle Plaine could possibly be contaminated.

BELLE PLAINE — Some locally made meats have been recalled over concerns of contamination.

Ruck’s Meat Processing in Belle Plaine voluntarily recalled a variety of sausage products that could have a disease-causing bacteria called Listeria monocytogenes. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture hasn’t received any reports of illness or reaction from consumers.

The department’s inspectors found the product was processed in a way that could result in Listeria contamination, according to its report from a routine sampling.

The store’s ring bologna sausage is subject to the recall and is sold at the Ruck’s Processing retail store in Belle Plaine and was sold to Minnesota’s Largest Candy Store near Jordan.

On Oct. 26, Owner Rex Ernst said something potentially got kicked up off the floor to a product when meats were coming out of their smokehouse, so the state held it because of possible contamination.

He explained the state did a test on a breakfast sausage that was put in the freezer and held it until the results came back. None of that product went out, and neither did products on the same shelf, including ring bologna, he said. Other Ring bologna sold to the candy store was quickly pulled, he added.

Ernst said he doesn’t want people going into a panic.

“There’s nothing at the candy store that was contaminated, absolutely not,” Ernst said.

Ruck’s Meat Processing also makes sausage products under the label Tollefson Family Pork, sold at the Minneapolis Farmer’s Market. Those products under recall are: polish sausage, Rex smoked breakfast sausage and smoked breakfast sausage. Ernst said those didn’t have Listeria.

“There’s been people bringing stuff back here because they didn’t read any of the articles,” he said. “Deli ham, for instance ... someone brought that back — it’s been crazy.

“It was a precautionary measure by the state,” he added. “We voluntarily did it — they didn’t make us do it. We then pulled it off (possibly contaminated products) because it was a possible thing. If I would have known then what I know now, I wouldn’t have done it.”

The Ag Department’s spokeswoman, Margaret Hart, said she couldn’t talk about the details of the case because it is still an open investigation.

Ruck’s Meat Processing sausage products subject to this recall bear the establishment number “8921” in the state inspection mark, and a date of Oct. 26 on the label, according to the Food Poison Label.

Foods contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially serious disease with symptoms such as fevers, sever headaches, neck stiffness and nausea, according to the state’s report. It can also lead to miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.
