Chasing Rainbows

“Chasing Rainbows: The Road to Oz” tells the story of young Frances Gumm who went on to become Judy Garland.

EXCELSIOR — Old Log Theatre is giving theater-lovers a sneak peek of the new musical “Chasing Rainbows: The Road to Oz.”

The theater is hosting a concert reading of the new musical at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 22. The event will be open to the public and tickets cost $10, according to a news release from the Old Log Theatre.

“Chasing Rainbows: The Road to Oz” will be at the Paper Mill Playhouse this fall. It tells the story of Minnesotan Frances Gumm and her early career.

Gumm went on to change her name to Judy Garland and star as Dorothy Gale in the “Wizard of Oz.”

Her music will be featured during the musical, including “Over the Rainbow,” “You Made Me Love You” and “Everybody Sing.”

The musical features Ruby Rakos as Judy Garland and Twin Cities actors will fill the other musical roles. Rakos and lead producer Tina Marie Casamento are hosting a conversation with the audience after the concert reading, the release says.

Garland’s daughter Liza Minnelli praised the show, according to the release saying, “My mother said that her biography is in her music, and now a talented creative team is using that music to tell the story of her early years and her extraordinary rise to fame.”
