Orono Police officials are warning people to take care after the department has received multiple reports of mail thefts in the area.
The thieves are targeting mailboxes during the evening and overnight hours and appear to be focusing on outgoing checks, a release from the department notes.
Police officials recommend that residents put outgoing mail in the secured, blue U.S. mail boxes. They also are advising people who see unknown vehicles in their neighborhoods to call 911 and request to have an officer check the area, especially if the occupants are near or are going through mailboxes.
