Individual boys tennis players from Orono and Wayzata will begin play at the state tournament on Thursday, June 6 (today), at the University of Minnesota’s Baseline Tennis Center.

Orono seniors Karthik Papisetty and John Kasner are both entered in the Class AA singles draw after placing first and second at the Section 2AA Tournament.

Papisetty will face Elk River junior Stewart Morrell in a first-round match at 8 a.m. on Thursday. Kasner is scheduled to play Brainerd junior Patrick Moraghan in another first-round match.

Wayzata senior John Foley is also in the Class AA singles draw and will face Blake School junior Joe Mairs in an 8 a.m. first-round match Thursday.

Eastview sophomore Gavin Young is the No. 1 seed in the Class AA singles tournament, while Eagan senior Max Zagrebelny earned the No. 2 seed.

The Class AA doubles draw features two teams from Wayzata and one from Orono.

Wayzata senior Michael Deal and junior William Deters received the No. 5 seed in the tournament. Deal and Deters are scheduled to play the Elk River tandem of senior Joseph O’Connell and junior Isaac Hultberg in a first-round match at 10 a.m.

Wayzata senior Sanjit Shah and freshman Jayho Hong will face the unseeded Duluth East team of juniors Nolan Humphreys and Michael Sutherland at 10 a.m.

Orono senior Cade Pfeiffer and freshman Matias Maule are scheduled to play the Willmar duo of seniors Hunter Fischer and Peyton Fischer.

First round, quarterfinal and consolation matches for both the singles and doubles tournaments will be played on Thursday, June 6. The semifinals, third place match, championship match and further consolation matches will take place on Friday, June 7.

The Class AA team tournament took place on June 4-5, after this edition of Lakeshore Weekly News went to press. Orono and Wayzata received the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds, respectively, and were scheduled to face each other in a quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday, June 4.
