Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools will celebrate a shortened “National School Lunch Week” on Monday and Tuesday with lessons from nutrition staff and changes in school lunches, according to a news release from the district.
Monday will be “Meatless Mondays,” where students can try alternative protein options. Tuesday will by “Try It Tuesday,” which will allow students to try an unusual fruit or vegetable or food cooked in an unusual way, according to the release.
Nutrition staff will put signage in the lunchroom about specific food items and what health benefits those food items provide.
October is also “Farm to School Month,” and Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools invited local farmers to the lunchroom to showcase locally-sourced foods on the menus.
Once per month, students in the Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools District are offered a locally-sourced meal from Minnesota, including turkey products from Ferndale Farms, produce from Green Earth Growers and Casey’s Acres, beef franks from Thousand Hills Cattle Company and apples from Thompson’s Hillcrest Orchard.
