The Prior Lake Legion baseball team fell just short of winning the 13th annual Mulvihill Invitational in Mankato June 30.
Owatonna denied Prior Lake the crown with a 10-6 victory in the title game at Franklin Rogers Park. The Huskies scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning to erase a one-run deficit.
Prior Lake went 2-2 at the invite, beating Sleepy Eye 6-4 and Mankato American 11-3 while falling to Chanhassen 8-1 in three pool play games.
Prior Lake (8-4 overall) will return to the diamond July 8 at home versus Lakeville South at 7 p.m. and will be on the road July 10 to take on Oakdale at 6 p.m.
Prior Lake will be a host site for the Annual Gopher Classic July 12-14, facing Alexandria in its first pool game July 12 at 4:30 p.m. The team also has pool games versus Brookings, South Dakota, on July 12 at 7 p.m.; De Pere, Wisconsin, on July 13 at 4:30 p.m.; Millard West in Nebraska on July 13 at 7 p.m. and Mankato National on July 14 at 7 p.m.
There are 15 pool sites in the Gopher Classic, and the winner of each advances to the next two rounds July 15-16. For more information, go to legionbaseballhub.com/gopherclassic.
In the loss to Owatonna, Sam Tanner led Prior Lake's offense, finishing 2 for 4 with a triple and two runs scored. Sam Emmerich and Henry Emmerich each went 2 for 3 with an RBI, and Alex Wattermann also drove in a run.
David Bornholdt took the loss, working two innings and allowing five runs (four earned). Blake Haferman started and went five innings, giving up five runs (two earned) while striking out five.
In the loss to Chanhassen, Prior Lake was down 7-1 after four innings and couldn't recover. Cooper Schnackenberg was saddled with the loss, allowing seven runs (four earned) in 3 2/3 innings of work while fanning three.
Haferman allowed a run in 1 1/3 innings. Sam Emmerich fanned three betters in one shutout inning, while Austin Gordon struck out two in one inning of work.
Sam Emmerich provided Prior Lake's lone run with a solo homer.
In the win over Mankato, Tanner finished 3 for 4 with two doubles, a triple and four RBIs. Sam Emmerich was 2 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs.
Wattermann and Henry Emmerich each finished 2 for 4 with an RBI, while Parker Shannon and Schnackenberg both drove in a run.
Kyle Celatka went four innings to get the win, allowing one unearned run while striking out two. Shannon tossed two relief innings, giving up a run, and Tyler Kelley pitched a scoreless frame.
Against Sleepy Eye, Prior Lake scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 4-4 tie. Henry Emmerich had the big hit, a two-out, two-run single.
Tanner finished 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Gordon, Sam Emmerich and Schnackenberg also had RBIs.
Camden Weisz tossed a complete game for Prior Lake, allowing two earned runs on seven hits while fanning one.
