Grace Affeldt is the lone state qualifier for the Burnsville girls swimming team.
The junior made the Class AA competition in diving at the Section 3AA meet Nov. 11, finishing second with 351.84 points. It will be her second state appearance.
Affeldt qualified as a ninth-grader in 2019, finishing 20th. There was was no state swim meet last fall due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The state diving competition starts Nov. 18 with the prelims at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. The finals (top 16) are Nov. 20.
Burnsville had two divers in the top seven at sections. Sophomore Paige Calvin finished seventh with 299.65 points, while sophomore Ava Roberts ended up 13th (263.95) for the Blaze.
The Section 3AA prelims were Nov. 10 and Burnsville had just three individual swims in the finals (top 16), which were Nov. 12.
Sophomore Amanda Cruz had the Blaze’s best finish, taking 11th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:14.23. Ninth-grader Lauren Bachmeier finished 16th in the 50 freestyle (26.65) and 15th in the 100 freestyle (57.90).
Burnsville’s three relays competed in the finals. The 200 medley team of Cruz, Bachmeier, senior Ava Puccolino and ninth-grader Minnerva Cardenas ended up seventh (2:05.00).
The 200 freestyle team of Cruz, Bachmeier and juniors Zoe Roberts and Theresa Nguyen finished eighth (1:50.17), as did the 400 freestyle team of Piccolino, Roberts, Cardenas and sophomore Emma Tilbury (4:10.22).
Burnsville ended up eighth in the team standings with 110 points. Eagan won the title (434), followed by Hastings (357.5), East Ridge (340.5), Eastview (331), Rosemount (251), Park (144) and Apple Valley (134).
Other finishes for the Blaze in the prelims included seventh-grader Liv Vatafu in the 200 freestyle (21st, 2:18.72) and the 500 freestyle (23rd, 6:10.31), Cardenas in the 200 individual medley (22nd, 2:33.36), Piccolini in the 100 butterfly (25th, 1:10.90) and the 100 backstroke (21st, 1:10.32) and Roberts in the 100 breaststroke (22nd, 1:26.87).
