The Burnsville cross-country teams battled the elements and a tough field at the annual Victoria Lions Invitational Oct. 1.
Rain turned the Chaska Par 30 Golf Course into a muddy mess, but the Blaze boys were able to finish in the middle of the pack, taking 10th with 265 points.
Eighth-ranked Stillwater won the title (52) ahead of No. 1 Eden Prairie (70), No. 6 Eastview (71), No. 11 Prior Lake (71) and Chanhassen (158).
On the girls side, the Blaze finished 13th with 400 points. Fourth-ranked Minnetonka topped the field (38), followed by No. 7 Eden Prairie (60), No. 2 Edina (95), Chanhassen (147) and Prior Lake (162).
The South Suburban Conference Championships are next for the Blaze. That race is set for Oct. 11 at Eagan High School.
For the Blaze boys, junior Matthew Krzmarzick led the way, taking 28th with a time of 18:17.3. Senior Bereket Wondimu finished 43rd (18:46.0), while sophomore Zach Friedman was 54th (19:13.1).
Other finishes for the boys include junior Zachary Warns (69th, 19:30.9), senior Jake Schouten (71st, 19:32.4), junior Ruben Ramirez (77th, 19:40.3) and sophomore Everette Sandbo (87th, 20:01.2).
For the Burnsville girls, eighth-grader Kaelyn Ambuehl led the team taking 58th (22:32.4). Senior Asha Ali was 84th (24:25.9), followed by eighth-grader Kira Theng (85th, 24:31.8), junior Abbey McAleer (86th, 24:47.4) and sophomore Darrian Gardner (87th, 24:47.4).
