Shakopee’s boom keeps on booming.
On Tuesday, big pharmaceutical distributor AmerisourceBergen announced plans to build a distribution center in Shakopee, along with two others in Mississippi and New York. The facilities will improve the company’s supply chain efficiency.
Construction on the new facilities is expected to start this summer and will take about 18 to 24 months to complete. Minneapolis-based Opus Development will build a 216,000-square-foot facility at the corner of Innovation Boulevard and Innovation Drive for AmerisourceBergen. The building will have 228 parking stalls and room for a 145,000-square-foot future expansion.
The number of jobs coming to Shakopee has not been announced.
AmerisourceBergen is the fourth company to announce major expansion to Shakopee in the past two weeks, following Marcus Theatres, Polaris Industries and Amazon.com.
“Enhancements to our distribution network combined with AmerisourceBergen’s unsurpassed knowledge and reach positions us to increase efficiency and drive innovation in pharmaceutical distribution and the delivery of health care,” said Bob Mauch, executive vice president and president of AmerisourceBergen Drug Corp.
The company handles about 35 percent of all pharmaceutical distribution in the United States.
The Shakopee City Council approved the final plat for the property on May 19.
AmerisourceBergen, a key supplier for retailers like Walgreen’s, also has a distribution center in Eden Prairie and 24 other locations nationwide. With over $120 billion in annual revenue, AmerisourceBergen is headquartered in Valley Forge, Penn., and employs approximately 16,000 people. AmerisourceBergen is ranked 28th on the Fortune 500 list.
