Shakopee East Middle School Principal Jim Miklausich is recovering from heart bypass surgery after his heart stopped on May 18 while he was driving to a yoga class and his car rolled into a pole.
According to a statement released by the Shakopee school district, after Miklausich’s heart stopped, his car began moving and rolled into a pole, but “fortunately for Miklausich,” someone nearby responded and called for emergency help.
“Within a very short amount of time, paramedics arrived on the scene and were able to restart Miklausich’s heart,” the statement says.
On Friday, May 24, Miklausich underwent a successful heart bypass surgery, the district said, and he will be released from the hospital in the coming days and continue physical rehabilitation for a few weeks. He plans to be back at the helm of East Middle School for the 2019-20 school year.
“It’s surprising that a physically fit, avid runner like Jim Miklausich, with no prior health concerns, has undergone this experience,” said Shakopee Public Schools Superintendent Mike Redmond. “All of us at Shakopee Public Schools are grateful that, from a health standpoint, his prognosis is excellent. We can’t wait for him to return to our leadership team.”
