Teachers and administrators hosted an open house last week to showcase the additions to Shakopee High School.

Students return to school Wednesday, when the expanded high school will open for its first school year after two years of construction.

The Academies of Shakopee curriculum model will also make its debut this school year.

In the academy curriculum model, elective courses are split into six main interest areas, or academies. These include science and technology, engineering and manufacturing, arts and communication, business and entrepreneurship, human services, and health sciences. The seventh is a freshman academy, which will help ninth-graders transition to the high school and serve as a home base for them until they choose an interest-based academy of their own.

The new high school addition includes a health science lab with computerized mannequins to simulate medical scenarios, a classroom modeled after a courtroom, a culinary arts lab, new theater stages and a fully functional branch of Hometown Bank.
