Fourth of July

Plenty of Independence Day festivities are scheduled in the southwest metro for Thursday July 4.

Independence Day is almost here, and for those looking to celebrate close to home there is no shortage of holiday fun planned in the southwest metro.

Chaska

Jonathan’s annual Fourth of July Celebration is a 50-year tradition with fun for the whole family. Morning activities include a 5K run and kid-friendly parade from the Karen House, 111000 Bavaria Road, Chaska, to the Kindergarten Center. Festivities will continue at the The Karen House with a bouncy house and slide, petting zoo, face painting, watermelon eating contest, live band, magic show and roaming magician, ice cream truck, popcorn, beverages, trinket bags for the kids and more.

Eden Prairie

Enjoy entertainment, food, activities and more throughout the day at Round Lake Park! The fun will include inflatables, BMX Demonstrations, kids activities, giant games, food, vendors, the pickleball tournament, a 5K Fun Run, face painting, henna tattoos, street art, a karaoke contest, the Eden Prairie Baseball Association Firecracker Classic, karaoke from 5–7 p.m., trivia from 5:30–7:30 p.m., live music from Synergy at 8 and 10:30 p.m. and fireworks at 10 p.m.

Prior Lake

The Prior Lake Association will host its annual boat parade at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 4 beginning at Charlie's on Prior on Upper Prior Lake, followed by a fireworks display on Lower Prior Lake usually after 10 p.m., providing excellent views from almost anywhere north or west of Lakefront Park. Head to Mystic Lake Casino Hotel at 5 p.m. for the Rock and Rockets festival. Celebrate the red, white and blue with G.B. Leighton, food trucks, cold drinks and summer sweets. Cap off the night with the fireworks show.

Shakopee

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community invites the public to its annual free fireworks display at 10 p.m. at the Wacipi (Pow Wow) Grounds, 3212 Dakotah Pkwy, Shakopee. Celebrate Independence Day with live horse racing and the Fireworks Encore at Canterbury Park. There will be fireworks shows on both July 3 and July 4. Enjoy fun Independence Day activities, face painting and pony rides from 4 to 8 p.m. and live music from Boogie Wonderland. Fireworks will follow the live racing at about 10:15 p.m. Kids ages 17 and under are always free admission. Head to Valleyfair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. at Picnic Point for a Fourth of July barbecue. Enjoy BBQ favorites, a star-studded photo booth and more. Stop by Galaxy Theater to watch the world’s best frisbee dogs do their thing: weave pole and barrel racing, doggy dancing and daredevil stunts. Plus, you can meet the pups after the show. When night falls on July 4, stay for an Independence Day event that will knock your sparklers off -- one of the area’s most impressive displays of Fourth of July celebration fireworks.
