Back by popular demand, English Bulldogs participated in the Running of the Bulldogs at Canterbury Park on Sunday.

These non-wagering races keep the crowd entertained between thoroughbred horse races.

A total of 72 dogs raced, 12 in each of six heats, with the winners returning on Labor Day for the "Bark In The Park Championship." The dogs came from as far away as Eveleth and Chicago.

The Bulldog races kick off another season of canine competition, followed by basset hounds on June 16, wiener dogs July 27 and Corgis Aug. 18. The 12 fastest dogs from each of the four days return to Canterbury Park to compete in the championship dog races on Sept. 2.

The Shakopee racetrack is celebrating its 25th season of live horse racing since re-opening in 1995.
