The Shakopee Fire Department responded to a report of a water flow alarm at Dem-Con Materials Recovery Facility on June 13 and arrived to find smoke, and extinguished a fire.

They responded to 13161 Dem Con Drive at 7:45 p.m., and found light smoke coming from the building and the fire sprinkler and suppression systems activated, according to a city press release.

Firefighters were able to locate the source and extinguish the fire and all employees in the building at the time of the incident evacuated safely, the release said.

“This is a great example of why fire sprinkler systems are installed. Without such a system this fire would have been devastating to the business and the employees,” Fire Marshal Tom Pitschneider said in the release.

Dem-Con receives commercial and residential single-stream recyclable material, which is then separated and packaged for re-use. The facility can process 20 tons of material per hour.

The Shakopee Fire Department is investigating the incident. Mdewakanton Public Safety, Chaska, Prior Lake and Savage fire departments assisted.
