Steffon Mitchell is currently in Boston going to school at Boston College and preparing for his first season as a Division I college basketball player.
Mitchell, a 2016 Shakopee graduate, decided to take his basketball talents to Boston College after completing a post graduate year at Sunrise Christian Academy in Wichita, Kan.
Mitchell announced his decision to go to Boston College on May 5 and moved to Boston to start classes and basketball practice on June 11.
Mitchell is Shakopee’s all-time leader in career points (1,985) and rebounds (800).
Mitchell took some time from his busy schedule in Boston to answer some questions from the Shakopee Valley News via email and direct message.

SVN: How is Boston?
SM: Boston is great. I’m glad I went here. There is so much to do and the academics here are great.
SVN: Why Boston College and what sold you on that school?
SM: Boston College sold me on their school by showing me how I could step in and play and the school is great here.
SVN: You went the prep school route after graduating from Shakopee, how did that year go at prep school — education- and basketball-wise?
SM: It helped me with basketball a lot because now my game is way more developed than it was in high school and I am a lot stronger, quicker and more athletic.
SVN: How has your game improved since graduating from Shakopee?
SM: I’m a way better shooter and I have improved a lot on the defensive end. I can now finish way better around the rim.
SVN: Any regrets about going to prep school?
SM: I have absolutely no regrets about anything including prep. It was a perfect decision for me and I’m glad I did it.
SVN: What position will you play at BC and is the plan to play as a freshman?
SM: I will play the three (small forward) and the four (power forward) and my goal is to play this year as a freshman.
SVN: Playing in the Atlantic Coast Conference with storied programs such as Duke, North Carolina, Louisville, etc. what are you looking forward to the most about playing in that conference ?
SM: I’m looking forward to competing against every team and playing at a high level and playing in the best conference in the country.
SVN: What are you working on right now on the off-season with the BC coaches?
SM: I’m working on getting bigger, faster and stronger and I’m continuing to improve all assets in my game.
SVN: Are you taking summer classes and practicing with the team right now? What is your major?
SM: Yeah and we are lifting and practicing already and my major is in marketing.
