The Shakopee wrestling team are the state champions.

Shakopee captured its first state wrestling title on Thursday night at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul when they defeated Stillwater 35-22 for the Class 3A state championship.

The Sabers jumped out to a 13-0 lead when Pierson Manville earned a pin at 106, Paxton Creese a major decision at 113 and Ben Lunn a decision at 120 pounds.

Stillwater answered by winning the next five matches to go up 19-13 lead after the 152 pound match.

That's when Connor Raines stepped to the mat against Stillwater's Antony Tuttle.

Those two battled to a 4-4 tie late in the third period when a scramble ensued and it appeared Tuttle was going to get the winning take down but Raines fought it off and got the takedown himself to win the match 6-4 and stop Stillwater's momentum and cut the lead to 19-16.

Carson Manville and Jack Casey built off that momentum with a pin from Manville and a major decision from Casey for a 25-19 lead.

Stillwater won at 195 pounds to cut the lead to 25-22 but the Johnson brothers finished the Ponies off with a 2-0 decision by Joey Johnson at 220 and a pin from Tommy Johnson at heavyweight.
