Senior Yonis Mohamud heads to the basket in Shakopee’s 76-56 South Suburban Conference home win over Prior Lake Jan. 4.

Last season, the Shakopee boys basketball team opened the season with nine straight wins en route to winning the Section 2AAAA title.

This winter, the No. 2-ranked Sabers are off to a 10-0 start, including 4-0 in the South Suburban Conference. Senior Sam West scored 19 points in Shakopee’s 80-70 home win over Lakeville South Jan. 11.

The Sabers went into the game off of an 83-64 victory Jan. 8 versus Eden Prairie, a Section 2AAAA foe.

Shakopee is already 5-0 against section teams, including wins over No. 9 Minnetonka (87-79), Edina (89-52), Chaska (84-58) and Prior Lake (76-57).

The Sabers made it all the way to the Class 4A state semifinals last year before losing to eventual champion Wayzata. Shakopee avenged that loss back on Dec. 14 with an 90-87 road win over the No. 3 Trojans.

Unbeaten Park Center (9-0) holds the top ranking in the state.

Lakeville North, at No. 4, is the only other ranked SSC team. The Sabers will meet the Panthers at home Jan. 21 and again on the road Feb. 22.

Eastview, who has been ranked as high as No. 6 this winter, is the defending SSC champion. The Lakers will get the Lightning at home Jan. 28 and on the road Feb. 24.

Meanwhile, in the victory over Lakeville South, Shakopee jumped out to a 44-27 lead at the break and held on from there. The Sabers had five players in double figures.

Senior Nick Katona finished with 13 points, while senior Quinten Snell scored 12. Senior Cade McGraw and sophomore Isaac Snell scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Junior Chandler Rose chipped in eight points for the Sabers, while sophomore Jalen Langsy scored five.

In beating Eden Prairie, Shakopee again dominated the first half leading 48-28 at the break. Katona led the way with 23 points, while McGraw scored 17 and Quinten Snell finished with 10.

West and senior Yonis Mohamud each scored nine points, while Isaac Snell and senior Josh Magin both had six.

Against Burnsville Jan. 7, Shakopee jumped out to a 45-26 lead at the half en route to a 84-48 conference road win. West led all scorers with 26 points.

Katona finished with 19 points, followed by McGraw with 11, Quinten Snell with nine and Mohamud with six.

The Sabers still have two non-league games left before the playoffs — versus Chanhassen (a section foe) Jan. 5 and at Maple Grove Feb. 16.

This year’s Section 2AAAA tournament will start March 9 with quarterfinal play. The semifinals are March 18 and the title game will be March 22. The higher seed is at home throughout the postseason.

The Sabers beat Chaska for the title last winter to earn their first state berth since 2015. Shakopee was also state qualifiers in 2014.

Shakopee made six straight trips to state in Class 3A starting in 2000, including winning the title in 2005. The next season the Sabers made the move to Class 4A.

This year’s Class 4A state tournament is set for March 21-26 at a site yet to be determined.
